Leben in Deutschland test: format and preparation
Preparing means getting comfortable with both the topics and the German wording. Use this guide to plan your practice, then check the official BAMF information before booking your test.

What is on the test?
The Einbürgerungstest has 33 questions and a 60-minute time limit. Thirty questions cover general topics; three concern your federal state. Select one of four options for each question. At least 17 correct answers are needed to pass.

A practical study routine
Start with the general catalogue
Read a small group of questions each time. Before checking the answer, explain to yourself what the question asks. Pay attention to words such as “nicht” and “kein”, which reverse the meaning.
Learn your state questions
Study all ten questions for your home state. Look carefully at the coats of arms and maps as well as the text. Practise recognising the image, not just the position of an option.
Return to mistakes
Use the browser app’s mistake review and bookmarks to revisit difficult questions. Keep the German original as your reference; an optional translation can help you understand it. Machine translations are labelled.
Try a timed mock exam
Choose your home state in the app and complete a mock exam. Review the questions you missed afterwards. A practice result is feedback for studying, not an official certificate or a guarantee of passing.
Arrange the real test
Use the official BAMF information to find registration guidance. Ask your test centre about dates, documents and the arrangements for your appointment. The app does not book or administer the exam.
Leben in Deutschland and the Einbürgerungstest
Both use the published question catalogue. If you need a result for a particular application, check the required test and result with the responsible authority. Our mock exam uses the Einbürgerungstest threshold of 17 correct answers.
